In the early 1990s the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment published the supplement to the fourth report on spatial planning. This policy document achieved fame and notoriety under its Dutch acronym, Vinex. In its wake, hundreds of thousands of dwellings were erected throughout the Netherlands in what has become known as Vinex districts. Sometimes eulogised, often vilified, they have nevertheless always been the source of lively debate. The Vinex Atlas provides the first, in depth account of the entire stock of Vinex architecture, describing 52 districts though the aide of historical and recent aerial photographs, plans and exhaustive site plans and data. Accompanying the atlas is a comprehensive essay which examines the genesis and implementation of the Vinex programme.
